2017 - Year in Review

Dearest Reader,

I must apologize about my silence as of late. Well, It would appear almost all of 2017. There are many times I would have loved to have written to you. I felt it was best not to. My silence has been quite intentional.

2017 was going to be better than 2016. Or at least that was the plan. I had plans to really build my brand. Start a Youtube channel geared towards my fellow spoonies. Blog more. Instagram more. Jump start my jewelry business.

Things in 2017 started off rocky in my personal life. So clearly my attention was elsewhere. Aaron left me in May and I decided to stay fairly silent on the matter. I'm sure he expected me to lash out every which way on social media. Sometimes I don't behave as expected.

I've learned number of things since my marriage broke up. A few I'm going to touch on in this blog. The first thing I learned was you find out who your real friends are real quick in a divorce. For the record, if I ask you have you heard from Aaron and you tell me no, you may want to make sure you are either telling me the truth or I have no way of verifying it. In this instance your insistent no was quickly proven out to be a lie. I was checking cell records daily. Your number was on the text logs a lot. Don't feel bad. A few people got caught that way.

As I said you learn who your real friends are. These are the friends that step up, circle the wagons with you. The friends who call more, check on you more, make sure you're eating once in awhile. I am very blessed to have a number of these amazing friends, both locally and via the internet.

I've learned you are given what you need when you need it. Almost a month after Aaron left, my friend Annie and I were out in my jewelry studio when Annie thought she heard a cat. She did some digging and found some very weak, dehydrated, flea covered kittens that we estimate were about a week old.

Annie and I quickly ran to petsmart and bought a bottle and formula and then went to Target for some Dawn dish washing soap (for the fleas). Did you know kittens need to be fed every three hours? I didn't. Guess what I ended up doing. That's right, feeding kittens every three hours for three or so weeks. I was never so happy when I was able to wean them and they could eat kitten food. So many people told me how amazing I was to do this for the kittens. Maybe yes, probably no. They gave me something to focus on, someone to help. In one small way I could effect positive change in the middle of my life being thrown out of wack. Also, you should know all the kittens found furever homes. I did end up adopting one of the black ones.

I've learned it's okay to be alone. Until a few months ago, I had never lived on my own. I got married in college. I went from having a roommate to having a husband. At first I didn't know what to do with myself. Change is scary, but it's not always bad. I've learned to embrace the solitude and the quiet. I boxed up things that weren't mine. I rearranged rooms. I made this space mine and mine alone. I turned my house into a place of peace and rest.

While I was learning how to live alone, I also learned I really don't know who I am. I recently ran across this and it made me think:

It was like somebody took a bucket of cold water and threw it on me. Talk about a light bulb moment. I'm still thinking about it and trying to figure out what to do with it.

Traditionally I try to learn something new each year to improve myself. It's typically a skill of some kind. Find something I'm interested in and take a class or read up about it. So here is what I've decided. 2018 is going to be the year I learn about me. Old baggage is going to be left at the curb for garbage collection. Toxic people no longer have a place in my life. It's time to get to know me, a balanced and healthy me.

And here is some food for thought. Despite society telling me I should be upset over the break up of my marriage, I've found I'm a much happier person. And healthier (to date I'm down 39 pounds). They say a picture is worth a thousand words, so here you go!

Until next time

Mr. Holstein Guest Blogs

Hello Humans! I am Mr. Holstein.  Mom left her computer open so I have decided to take over her blog today.  You may wonder how I am able to type, I ask you to suspend your disbelief during the duration of this blog.

You may wonder what a cat has to blog about.  Life is not just about catnaps and kitty treats (although those are quite important).  We felines are concerned about social topics just as you Homo sapiens are.  You just don't realize it because so very few of you speak cat.

I am very concerned about the genocide you humans are waging on my kind.  Some of you humans are responsible owners and get us spayed and neutered.  Some of you humans don't, which leads us to breed uncontrollably.  According to statistics I found on the cater-net just two feral cats (the wild offspring of domestic cats) can quickly become 2,000. In fact, the feline reproduction statistics are staggering. Two uncontrolled breeding cats produce: Two litters a year, at a survival rate of 2.8 kittens per litter. Continued breeding will produce 12 cats the first year, 66 cats the second year, 2,201 cats in the third year, 3,822 cats in the fourth year, 12,680 cats in the fifth year, and on and on . . .

This prolific breeding lands millions of my fellow felines in animal shelters.  My friends, the canines, also end up in animal shelters as well.  It is estimated only half of us get adopted (check out the stats).  Why do you do this to us?  We are all good kitties (the jury is still out on the dogs, though).  We just want a home where we can be petted, fed, and given the occasional kitty treat. Is that too much to ask?

I plead with you, please stop killing my fellow cats. Get your cats fixed.  If you don't have a cat and can responsibly bring one of us home, would you please consider it?  You will save a life and gain a great furry purry friend.

I think I hear Mom coming - I better go.

Crazy Cat Lady Pt 2

A couple days ago I shared with you my fear of turning to a crazy cat lady (Pt 1 Here) and yesterday I shared with you some pictures of my black cats because it was Friday the 13th (here).  Part of being a crazy cat lady is collecting lots and lots of cats. I choose to do it virtually and on Pinterest.  I share with you now part of my collection.

And Finally...

Happy Friday the 13th

Dearest Reader, Happy Friday the 13th.  Yesterday I expressed my concern that I may be turning into a Crazy Cat Lady (catch up here).  Since it is Friday the 13th, I figured I would let a few adorable black cats cross your path, namely Yoda, Gus, and Anna.  There is no bad luck with these three furry purries, unless you're a gecko that gets in the house, then you're in trouble.  Enjoy the cuteness!

Run for your lives! It's a Vampire Cat! Wait, no, it's just Gus sleeping and showing off his Missouri Mutant Cat teeth.  Since he came from Missouri, we should be thankful he has teeth at all (Genny and Mom Marcusson, feel free to send your hate mail regarding this joke)

It's an EVIL cat! Nope, just Yoda on a dresser where she isn't suppose to be.  My cats have a hard time with the rule "stay off the antiques".

Yet another rule breaker.  Anna Banana the Twitter Cat is on my 1920's coffee table.  Thanks for volunteering to dust it Anna, but I'm afraid you'll leave more fur then you dust.

Gus likes to sleep. He is so good at it he finds a number of creative positions to sleep in.  It is to bad the summer Olympics don't have a lounging competition.  Gus would win it paws down.

Would Miss Yoda like to go out with the trash? It can be arranged!

Anna looks up to Gus and is trying to mimic his rigorous lounging schedule.  Anna is seen here on top of the fish tank.

This is why Gus is the champ of lounging. He can take a nap just about anywhere, even on top of a couch cushion.  Good job Gus.

There you have it, three black cats crossed your path and you survived to tell the tale!  If you think these critters are cute, feel free to share with friends! My cats LOVE to be famous.

Crazy Cat Lady Pt 1

I have five cats.  It started with Yoda 12 years ago when we moved to Dallas.  She was a tiny cute little black kitty from a rescue organization.  Shortly after Yoda we rescued a tuxedo kitty we named Obi Wan Catobie (Yes, I am a geek, catch up here).  Unfortunately, Obi only lived a few years. He developed an illness the vet couldn't treat.

About five years ago, my husband and I went to Missouri for his younger brother's wedding.  Aaron's parents have a number of farm cats and at the time they had a lot of tuxedo kitties.  I picked out Mr. Holstein to become Yoda's new friend.  However, a little black kitty picked my husband.  Gus decided he wanted to come home with us.
The Loveable Gus and Mr. Holstein

Two year ago Aaron was visiting his parents farm and found two mini-me's of Gus and Mr. Holstein.  The two girls were such perfect matches they were irresistible and somehow ended up in Texas.

All five of my fuzzies have distinct personalities and are extremely entertaining.  I don't know what I would laugh at if they weren't around.  Anna Banana loves to help me tweet.  She is also very talkative and if she has something on her mind, she will sure let you know it!  Mr. Holstein and Nina love to help me feed my fish.  All you have to say is I'm feeding the fishies and they come running to "help"
Miss Nina "helping" me feed the fish

So, the thing is, with the five cats, it seems like I am always posting about them on Facebook, tweeting about them, and uploading images of them on Tumblr. If that wasn't enough, I'm always pinning funny cat pictures on Pinterest.  Which makes me wonder, does that make me a crazy cat lady?  What are your thoughts?

The Gus Man

Dearest Reader, I realize I have blogged about my pets before.  I blog about them because they are a big part of my life.  My pets have become a bigger part of my life since I’ve been ill.  I have jokingly made them all part of the Chrysalis Jewelry staff (read here ). They have such unique and wonderful personalities that that particular blog was a lot of fun to do.

Last night, as I suffered another sleepless night, my friend Gus was keeping me company.  Gus has always been an interesting cat, so I decided to do a blog about him (aren’t y’all so lucky!).  Gus came from my husband’s parents’ farm in Missouri.  His brother Holstein (Gus’s full name is Angus – Aaron’s parents have cattle and the bovine names seemed apt) has quite the personality, so Gus is not in the “spot light” as much as his more gregarious brother.  However, I have caught Gus on a number of occasions sleeping with his tongue out.

As I think about how Gus came to live with us, I realize it is his own unique personality that saved him from life as an outdoor farm kitty.  When we first met Gus, he was a little runty thing.  He was just a plain black kitten.  My husband enjoys fishing and takes the opportunity to do so every chance he can get when he visits his parents’ farm.  To our surprise, Gus would follow Aaron to the pond and fish with him every day.  Additionally, every time Aaron stepped out of the house, Gus would be right there.  Originally, we were just going to take Mr. Holstein home with us.  My husband was intrigued by Gus’s personality and said we should take them both.

Gus has always been a lover.  He loves to cuddle, both with his brother Holstein and us.  He is always trying to sneak into Aaron’s room so he can cuddle with Aaron.  A couple of years ago Aaron went to visit his parents and found “mini me’s” of Holstein and Gus.  Too cute to leave on the farm to possibly disappear like their two other littermates, they joined the family.  Dear Reader, if you know anything about cats, you know they typically don’t welcome newcomers with arms wide open.  It is typically quite the adjustment period, involving much hissing and spitting.  Gus took to the new kittens almost immediately.  He took on the role of “mom”.  We actually had a hard time keeping him out of the master bathroom (where we kept the girls until we could trust everyone to get along unsupervised); he usually stayed the night with the babies, cuddling up with them.

Since I’ve been home more, Gus has become my cuddle buddy.  In fact, for the past seven to eight months, he insists on sleeping at the foot of my bed.  Which is how we came to be hanging out last night.  I once again was not sleeping.  Around 3:30 this morning Gus moved from the foot closer to the head where I could pet him.  That is when a funny thing happened.  I would pet him for a little bit, but if I stopped, he would take his paw and pet my shoulder.  Then I would pet him some more, stop, and then he would pet my shoulder.  This pattern went on for quite a bit.  It was almost if he was saying “Shhhhh  Mommy, go to sleep.”

I am continually surprised and delighted at my interactions with my pets.  They are a source of joy and humor.  I am not sure what I would laugh at if it wasn’t for my crazy pets.  No wonder YouTube and Pinterest are filled with funny pet videos and pictures.  I’m not the only one who finds wonderment in her animal housemates.

Until Tomorrow – Melissa
